VSA Travel Teams

The Virginia Soccer Association (VSA) Travel Club supports U-9 through U-18 boys and girls travel teams on behalf of VSA players and families. The club is a member of the Old Dominion Soccer League, the Washington Area Girls Soccer League, the National Capital Soccer League, an affiliate of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association, the United States Youth Soccer Association, the United States Soccer Federation, and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Guidelines for Use of Turf Fields
Please ensure that all players using the turf fields are familiar with the rules in the following document: Guidelines for Field Use.
Adult Referees
VSA requires that the travel teams provide Grade 8 adult referees to help supplement our referee pool, allowing all home games for VSA to have quality referees, with all games being fully supported.

All teams must supply the first referee prior to their third season of play.  The second referee must be certified prior to the fourth season of play.  The referees sponsoring a team must be either (a) an adult or (b) a youth 16 years of age or older, and recommended by the referee assignors as being able to be counted as one of the adult referees.  Only one 16 year old may be counted as an adult referee.

The obligation of those adults signing up to be a Grade 8 referee for a team is to help referee two travel games a season.  Those two games will normally fall right before or after your child's home game.  In addition, VSA requests that you do agree to do some recreational games on Saturdays in order to gain some experience prior to being placed on a travel game.  The recreational referee assignor allows you to state how many you would like, and on what weekends you are available so that it is not too much of an inconvenience.

In order to be counted for a specific team, the teenage referee must either (a) play for that team, or (b) have a relative on the team.  A team may also "sponsor" an adult referee that is willing to meet the teams' referee obligation.

All teams not in compliance with the referee obligation by Spring 2008 will be fined, with all revenue going to the Field Fund.
VSA Sponsors Crossover (U8) Teams

For the third year, VSA will be sponsoring Crossover Teams for our U8 players.  This will be the first year for the girls team.

The crossover program seeks to identify Under-8 boys and girls that have genuine interest/enthusiasm for the game, have acquired/developed a very basic soccer aptitude faster than many of their teammates, classmates and neighbors, and would like to play with children of similar outlook on the game. There is an additional charge, in addition to registering with VSA, to play on this team as the team must also join the crossover league and may possibly be purchasing numbered jerseys. Players may play on either the crossover team or the VSA rec teams, but not both. In addition, playing on the crossover team does not guarantee the player a spot on a U9 travel team.

For details about trying out for the Crossover teams, please follow the "Travel Team Tryout" links on the left.

Interested in Coaching a Travel Team?
The VSA Board is interested in finding those individuals interested in coaching a travel team.  Currently, there is definitely a need for coaches for the U9 girls and U9 boys to start in the Fall, 2007.  Depending on the turn-out of players at Travel Team Tryout Days, it may be possible to establish two teams in each division.

If you are interested in pursuing any of these opportunities, or you feel there is sufficient interest in another age group to start an additional team, please submit your name, contact information, and coaching experience to travel@vsaonline.org.
