VSA Travel Teams

The Virginia Soccer Association (VSA) Travel Club supports U-9 through U-18 boys and girls travel teams on behalf of VSA players and families. The club is a member of the Old Dominion Soccer League, the Washington Area Girls Soccer League, the National Capital Soccer League, an affiliate of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association, the United States Youth Soccer Association, the United States Soccer Federation, and the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Guidelines for Use of Turf Fields
Please ensure that all players using the turf fields are familiar with the rules in the following document: Guidelines for Field Use.
Adult Referees

VSA requires that the travel teams provide minimally one Grade 8 adult referee to help supplement our referee pool, allowing all home matches for VSA to have quality referees, with all games being fully supported with a crew of 3 for the appropriate age groups. (A grade 9 level is acceptable for the first year of certification.)

All teams must supply an adult referee prior to their third season of play. The referee sponsoring a team must be either a parent or coach directly related to the team. A referee may only be the “Designated Referee” for one team. (Teams sitting out a season are exempt for that season.)

The obligation of the designated referee for a team is to possess the experience and confidence to officiate travel matches. Typically, it takes three seasons of certification to achieve this. Designated referees will gain experience officiating recreational matches on Saturdays. Once the individual has experience and confidence, travel matches will be assigned. These matches normally fall right before or after their child’s home matches. The referee assignor allows you to state how many matches you would like to work, and on what weekends you are available so that it is not an inconvenience.

All teams not in compliance with the referee obligation must provide minimally 1 adult to help line fields for the season. (Other league volunteer work could be substituted per season upon board approval).

VSA Sponsors Crossover (U8) Teams

The crossover program seeks to identify Under-8 boys and girls that have genuine interest/enthusiasm for the game, have acquired/developed a very basic soccer aptitude faster than many of their teammates, classmates and neighbors, and would like to play with children of similar outlook on the game. There is an additional charge, in addition to registering with VSA, to play on this team as the team must also join the crossover league and may possibly be purchasing numbered jerseys. Players may play on either the crossover team or the VSA rec teams, but not both. In addition, playing on the crossover team does not guarantee the player a spot on a U9 travel team.
