VSA announce Zone 1 and Foundation Phase U7-U12 - New Roles for current staff members

(Haymarket, VA) VSA is excited to announce the introduction of Zone 1 and Foundation Phase programming for our travel program for 2022-23. This will provide new roles and responsibilities for Nick Foglesong, Miles Rapp, and Jov Hall along with welcoming Lauren Marcum to the club.

"We believe we have looked at the best practices in USA/Europe to create better transitional development from 7v7 to 9v9 and 9v9 to 11v11. Each of these zones will have a clear focus on individual development through increased management on the implementation of curriculum. Miles, Jov, and Lauren will report directly to Nick Foglesong to create better lines of communication and develop a real culture of commitment to our core values as a club” Matt Lacey, VSA Executive Director

Nick Foglesong will now lead the club U7-U12 Travel Programming as the clubs Zone 1 Technical Director. Jov Hall, who will report to Nick, will be responsible for the clubs U7-U9 Foundation Phase programming which includes ADP U7/U8 and Travel U9. Also supporting Nick in his new roles will be Miles Rapp and Lauren Marcum who will take on roles as Director of Player Development U10-U12 for boys (Rapp) and girls (Marcum).

“Zone 1 is such a pivotal period for young players as they transition from the 7v7 to 9v9 game and then furthermore from the 9v9 to the 11v11 at U13. We are always looking for ways to enhance player growth and bridge the gap between the different age groups as well as the different levels of play. This new structure will allow us to maintain a consistent training environment for both the boys and girls as they build their passion for the game” Nick Foglesong, Zone 1 Technical Director.

The new structure in zone 1 will see Jov Hall and Miles Rapp promoted from the VSA Director mentorship program to full-time VSA staff members. Jov Hall has been with the club 3 years and has overseen the growth and development of the ADP program during the 2021-22 season. He is also an accomplished USSF C licensed zone 1 coach along with experience with VDA and DC United Academy teams. Miles Rapp will be entering year three at VSA in the fall and has been learning his craft working in both our recreation and travel program under the leadership of Nick Foglesong and Steve Hoover. Miles is an USSF C license coach in zone 1 and also an accomplished former NCAA division 1 player with experience in the NPSL and USL semi-professional leagues.

"I'm excited about expanding my role as Foundation Phase Director. This role will allow me to oversee both the boys and girls U9's and below. My goal for the program is to help foster an environment that allows kids to fall in love with the game as well as develop their ability on the field. VSA is a phenomenal place to be as a developing young coach. I'm thrilled to continue my own development with this added responsibility." Jov Hall

“I am thrilled  to have a bigger impact on developing players and coaches within the club. Working with the U10-U12 boys side, I am excited to continue to help the club grow in these age groups by bringing my experience as a player and my knowledge of the game. This new role will also challenge me to improve as a coach on and off the field. Getting to work alongside coach Nick Foglesong will be a great opportunity for me to grow as a leader.” Miles Rapp

Finally, Lauren Marcum will be joining the club from FC Fredericksburg. Lauren is currently taking her USSF B License and has had experience coaching for the successful VYSA ODP district and state program. Lauren has a strong youth and playing background (NCAA D2). We are excited to see Lauren join the club and provide our female players with a strong role model.

“I am excited to be joining the VSA in the fall. From my first interactions, I can see that both staff and players are talented and full of potential. I am grateful for this opportunity that will bring me new challenges and learning opportunities. I am looking forward to helping players grow on and off the field, and working alongside this talented staff.” Lauren Marcum
